Background of the Study

The role of family caregivers in elderly healthcare management is crucial, particularly in developing regions like Borno State, where formal healthcare services may be limited or inaccessible. Family caregivers are often the primary support for elderly individuals, assisting with daily activities, medication management, and emotional care (Gambo et al., 2023). In many cases, these caregivers play an essential role in promoting the health and well-being of elderly individuals, particularly those with chronic illnesses or disabilities. However, their involvement often comes with challenges, such as a lack of training, emotional stress, and physical fatigue, which can impact the quality of care provided to elderly patients (Mohammed et al., 2023).

In Borno State, where healthcare infrastructure may be compromised due to conflict and limited resources, family caregivers are pivotal in ensuring that elderly patients receive continuous care. Despite their importance, the roles and challenges faced by family caregivers in managing elderly healthcare are often under-explored. This study aims to evaluate the involvement of family caregivers in elderly healthcare management in Borno State, examining their roles, challenges, and the support they require to enhance care provision.

Statement of the Problem

Family caregivers in Borno State play a critical role in managing the health of elderly individuals, particularly in the context of limited formal healthcare services. However, the challenges faced by caregivers, including insufficient training and emotional stress, may compromise the quality of care provided. There is limited research on the effectiveness of family caregivers in elderly healthcare management in the region, and understanding their experiences is vital to improving support systems and healthcare delivery.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of family caregivers in elderly healthcare management in Borno State.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by family caregivers in managing elderly healthcare.

  3. To assess the support needed by family caregivers to improve the quality of care provided to elderly individuals.

Research Questions

  1. What role do family caregivers play in elderly healthcare management in Borno State?

  2. What challenges do family caregivers face in managing elderly healthcare?

  3. What support do family caregivers need to improve their ability to care for elderly individuals?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Family caregivers significantly contribute to the healthcare management of elderly patients in Borno State.

  2. Family caregivers in Borno State face challenges such as lack of training, emotional stress, and limited resources.

  3. Adequate support for family caregivers improves the quality of care provided to elderly patients in Borno State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on family caregivers in Borno State who are responsible for the care of elderly individuals. Limitations may include the difficulty of accessing caregivers in conflict-affected areas and challenges in assessing the full extent of caregiver involvement.

Definitions of Terms
